Supporting Information
We all know about mold, but do we understand the other 4 of the top 5 asthma triggers as ranked by the EPA? According to the USEPA 12 -14 American’s die every day due to asthma attacks that can be linked to five common indoor allergens, most of these deaths are preventable with a small amount of awareness and education.
As indoor air quality professionals we should understand allergy and asthma basics. By some estimates allergen and asthma trigger sampling is a 2.2 billion dollar untapped industry. The EPA has made new data available that will add a new dimension to established companies and create opportunities for new companies. Used properly the HUD Healthy Home Survey and ERMI® data will raise consumer awareness about indoor environmental hazards. There is a need for companies across the United States to understand this new data and incorporate it into their businesses.
Purpose
As new analytical methods are developed it is crucial for Indoor Environmental Health Professionals to understand and utilize the most current scientific processes available to them. Mold, allergens and other asthma triggers continue to create health issues and structural problems across the United States and other technologically developed societies.
Researchers from the National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) have developed and patented an innovative technology for identifying and enumerating the populations of indoor molds. This application of science to solving people’s problems with indoor mold growth is based on recent advances in what is known as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR technology offers significant advantages in the speed, accuracy and ease of analyses.
Mold-Specific Quantitative PCR (MSQPCR) can be considered the emerging standard in mold analysis. Utilizing MSQPCR and applying the data from the 2006 HUD Healthy Home Survey, Indoor Environmental Health Professionals can provide their clients a screening service that will enable asthmatic individuals to make informed choices about their indoor environments.
